Intern
INSIGHT Lab at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania

Hello! My name is Wesley Greer IV (he/him); I am a junior (graduation year: 2026) at Temple University majoring in Biophysics. Some organizations that I am currently a part of are the Institute of Diversity, Equity, Advocacy, and Leadership (IDEAL) as a Diversity Peer Educator, Temple Student Government as the Director of Community Engagement, the Pre-health Neuroscience Alliance as the Journal Club and Research Chair, and the Student Leadership Council on the Temple University Alumni Association. Some previous and current job/internship experience I have includes the Wang Mechanobiology lab (2022-present) where my personal project is developing a nanoscale model of tumor angiogenesis, the INSIGHT Research Lab (2023-present) where I help develop models for the most efficient and effective ways of teaching, and the Carnevale Research Lab (2023-present) where I characterize the different approaches for latent space interpolation for a protein family with a focus on linear versus energy-weighted interpolation.

This summer, I continued my unpaid internship with the INSIGHT Lab at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. In this lab, we are dedicated to understanding children’s diverse thought processes and identifying the most effective strategies to nurture their cognitive development. Through this lab, I utilize my skills in data analysis, leadership, organization, and more to lead data collection efforts in our projects and contribute to lab recruitment.

This internship is helping to prepare me for the future as after my undergraduate degree, I plan on pursuing an M.D./Ph.D. in neuroscience, conducting research at the nexus of neuroscience and quantum mechanics while also being active in tackling social justice issues. The INSIGHT research lab directly contributes to these efforts by helping me understand the framework for a section of the research I eventually want to pursue, while also introducing me to key issues such as current inefficiencies in teaching models and giving me the opportunity to directly influence said teaching models.

My favorite part of the internship is being able to explore topics that I am unfamiliar with and see how I eventually understand what I couldn’t understand before. It is a rewarding experience to then be able to explain said topics with confidence to an individual who wants to learn more about them.

If you are starting an internship, my top piece of advice would be to simply be open to a myriad of new experiences. You will experience things you like and things you may not be interested in, but every experience will cause you to understand and refine your interests. If you are currently searching for an internship, my top piece of advice would be to simply talk to people. This doesn’t have to be in a social event setting, this can really be anywhere: on the train, in class, going to the gym, etc. Everyone has a connection to someone, and some people are looking to help others out, you just have to talk to the right person.
