Shelby Dorsaint (she/her) graduated from Temple University College of Public Health in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and a minor in Nutrition. Shelby demonstrated her Temple pride through active involvement and leadership roles in the Temple University Owlettes Majorette dance team serving as the Social Media Coordinator and as a member of the Haitian Student Organization. During her time at Temple University, she developed a strong sense of confidence and a passion for helping others, which motivated her extensive involvement and commitment to the North Philadelphia community.

Shelby interned with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health's initiative, Get Healthy Philly, where she promoted physical activity and wellness by creating blog posts for the department. Additionally, she interned with the Coalition for Food and Health Equity, assisting in the development of their annual report and engaging in community outreach to combat racial food injustices in North Jersey.

Fueled by the experiences and passion she gained at Temple, Shelby is now a second-year Master's student in the Occupational Therapy program at Columbia University Valegos College of Physicians and Surgeons.  She also serves as a research assistant for a faculty member within the department, focusing on addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) concerns within the field of Occupational Therapy.

What are your career goals?

I plan to work in an acute care setting as an Occupational Therapist, specializing in the care of older adults. Additionally, I aspire to establish a non-profit organization dedicated to serving underserved communities by providing resources for equitable health

How has the Career Center helped you achieve your career goals?

The Temple University Career Center has been instrumental in supporting me both during my time at Temple and after graduation. The Career Center helped me gain clarity on which health career path best suited my characteristics and traits. Most importantly, they assisted me with editing and refining numerous drafts of my personal statement for graduate school, which played a crucial role in my acceptance into every program I applied to.

What tips do you have for students also navigating their careers?

The top tip for students is to truly understand yourself and what you desire in a career. Take full advantage of the opportunities provided by Temple's Career Center, which offers various avenues to explore your interests. Additionally, Philadelphia has numerous opportunities to build connections that can enhance your career perspectives. Make the most of the resources available to you at Temple University!
